For many Americans, Monday’s Labor Day holiday marks the unofficial end of summer. Don’t let these last carefree days quietly slip away without a proper send-off. Celebrate with a backyard party or a picnic at the beach or park. Keep it casual, yet festive by serving lobster rolls with corn on the cob, potato chips, and brownies for dessert. Doesn’t that sound like a perfect feast to mark the end of a fun-filled summer?
Lobster Rolls (sandwiches filled with sweet and succulent lobster meat) are most popular in the New England states — especially Maine, Connecticut and Eastern Long Island. There are two ‘schools of thought’ when it comes to serving lobster rolls: warm or cold . . . In Connecticut, lobster rolls are served warm, with just a drizzle of butter. In Maine and in Long Island, mayonnaise is either spread on the inside of the bread or mixed with the lobster by itself and in some cases with diced celery and herbs.

Note: Here in Southern California, I purchased live lobsters for $5.99/pound from a Vietnamese grocery store. You can find cooked lobsters at Whole Foods and Bristol Farms. Costco usually carries frozen lobster tails.

I usually only eat lobster with drawn butter, but I’m a lobster roll fan now. I do like it with a bit more mayonnaise and tarragon, but I’m sure the purists are shaking their heads, screaming “NO!”.

We took our daughter to Mystic, CT when she was just a year old. In the Old Village, we were having lunch and ordered off the kid menu for her. She wouldn’t touch what we ordered for her; as soon as she saw our lobster rolls, she had to have some. She took her first bite… and that was the beginning of her lobster love affair (as well as the end of any hope we had of eating our own lobster rolls)! 7 years later, she still loves lobster and shows no signs of stopping!

I love love LOVE Maine lobster rolls. It’s one of the things I really miss about the US. These look so succulent I can almost smell them. *licks computer screen*
I looooove lobster rolls. We have an amazing place near us called Luke’s Lobsters. I could eat these every day.

Frugal, surprisingly, I was able to find inexpensive lobsters in the US west coast, but normally it is a bit out of my price range, too. We had a very nice, indulgent lunch!
